Up until now, there have been very few products on the market in the US that were considered “halal.” Today, we are seeing an increase of these products. More companies are finding importance in making products that cater to all beliefs and practices. As a celebration to diversity, 786 Cosmetics has created a halal nail polish that practicing Muslims can wear.
So what does halal mean? What is halal nail polish? Keep reading to discover more about this beauty breakthrough!
What Is Halal?
Halal is an Arabic word for lawful, or permitted. Halal is commonly used in relation to meat, food, personal care products, cosmetics and, recently, nail polish. For something to be considered halal, it must meet the following criteria:
- Free from any component that Muslims are prohibited from consuming according to Islamic law (Shariah).
- Processed, made, produced, manufactured and/or stored using utensils, equipment and/or machinery that have been cleansed according to Islamic law
Are All Beauty Products Halal?
No. There are many beauty products that are not halal. This is because many ingredients in these products are prohibited by the Qur’an. This includes alcohol and other ingredients derived from animals.
What Makes Most Nail Polishes Prohibited In Muslim Faith?
Many formulas include the prohibited ingredients described above. Additionally, most nail polishes are also not breathable. They do not let water or air through. Why does this aspect matter? According to the Muslim faith, the entire body must be cleansed before performing the 5 daily prayers. This includes nails as well. This act of washing before prayer is referred to as performing “Wudu”. Traditional polishes form a barrier over the nail, meaning oxygen and water are unable to touch the skin itself. Practicing Muslims needed to completely remove nail polish before prayer and later apply it again. The constant removal and application of nail products becomes not only an inconvenience, but also a damaging process to nails and cuticles. Because of this, many Muslim women have never worn polish…until now!
So, What Is Halal Nail Polish?
Halal nail polish is breathable and allows oxygen and water to pass through. The technology is similar to what is used in contact lenses. When water is able to penetrate the polish and reach the nail, practicing Muslims can wear it during prayer rituals. Halal nail polish is better for the nails in general. These formulas allow the nails to breathe and are typically created with less harmful ingredients.
Are Halal And Vegan The Same?
Many people are curious to know: are there a difference between Halal and Vegan cosmetic products? Yes, there is a difference. If a product is halal, it must also be considered vegan. This is true because halal products do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. However, if a beauty product is vegan, that does not necessarily mean that it is halal. Halal cosmetics need to be certified as such and cannot contain prohibited alcohol (according to the Islamic law). Make sure to read a product’s ingredients and look for the halal logo on the packaging to ensure it is certified halal.
What Are The Benefits Of Wearing Halal Nail Polish?
Halal and vegan nail polishes have many health benefits. Once you know about the harmful chemicals in typical nail polish, you’ll never go back. Many top nail brands use harsh ingredients that are known to cause cancer or contribute to other negative health concerns. 786 Cosmetics is an up-and-coming brand that offers an innovative nail polish formula with unmatched pigmentation and wear-ability that are completely halal, vegan and cruelty-free. Now you don’t have to sacrifice quality for a healthier alternative.
And don’t worry, 786 Cosmetics has certifications proving their nail products are halal, vegan, cruelty-free and water-permeable. The water-permeability aspect of these polishes allows for oxygen and water to penetrate the nail polish. This allows your nails to breathe and not be trapped under a thick layer of polish. Say goodbye to thin, brittle nails: 786 Cosmetics polishes are also free of the 11 harshest chemicals found in standard nail polish, such as formaldehyde, toulene and DBP.
How Can You Prove That 786 Cosmetics’ Formula Is Wudu-Friendly?
In theory, if oxygen permeates a film then hydrogen attached to oxygen (water) can also travel through the film. In a laboratory setting, we are able to demonstrate that oxygen can transfer from one side of the film to the other in a diffusion chamber. If the outcome is positive, then the theory is satisfied. Experimentally, a nail polish film sample is put inside a diffusion chamber separating the two halves of the chamber. Oxygen flows into the top of the chamber and an oxygen-free carrier gas flows into the other half on the other side of the film. This experiment concludes that water passes through the surface of the polish, making the product “breathable” and “Wudu-friendly”.
Additionally, 786 Cosmetics recommends applying no more than 2 coats of thin, evenly layered polish. This application process will help to ensure the permeability of the products.

ASA/Hi
I read the proof of permeability but the question is how long does it take the oxygen/water to penetrare? because that matters too. Wudu will expose your hands to water for a short time (1-3) minutes so is that time enough?
Thank you
